The Big 12 Conference has issued a substantial fine and implemented a new policy to address discriminatory fan behavior following offensive chants directed at BYU during a recent game.

Big 12 Conference Imposes Fine and New Policy Following Offensive Chants at UCF-BYU Game

The recent football matchup in Orlando saw the UCF Knights secure a remarkable and unexpected victory this past weekend. The game featured an extraordinary sequence of plays in the fourth quarter, leading to an overtime period and ultimately a program-defining win for UCF.

The outcome was surprising, not only due to the dramatic unfolding of events but also because of the final result. The contest included a blocked field goal, a crucial goal-line stand, and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, all preceding the extra periods. Two overtimes followed, packed with additional tension, culminating in the traditional field storming by fans. For BYU, the loss was particularly shocking, as they entered the game as clear favorites, having just achieved a major win against Notre Dame in Provo that had significantly altered the College Football Playoff landscape and elevated the Cougars to a top-two ranking.

However, another notable aspect of the game emerged even before kickoff.

Footage captured inside Acrisure Bounce House showed a segment of UCF supporters engaging in chants of "f*** the Mormons," a clear reference to BYU's religious affiliation. While spirited banter, chants, rivalries, and even intense animosity are often part of college football culture, directing insults at another institution's religious identity is widely considered to cross an unacceptable boundary.

Security personnel removed some individuals involved, but the Big 12 Conference addressed the situation more comprehensively in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon.

Conference Response and New Policy

The conference acknowledged "the pregame protocols followed by UCF and immediate actions taken during the game, including removal of some individuals responsible for the conduct." Nevertheless, the statement firmly declared that "discriminatory behavior has no place in the Big 12."

As a consequence, the conference has imposed a $100,000 fine on UCF. This financial penalty will be allocated to student education initiatives. In conjunction with this measure, the Big 12 is immediately implementing an updated, conference-wide policy designed to establish escalating penalties for discriminatory conduct occurring at athletic events.

Details of the Updated Enforcement

The newly established disciplinary framework outlines specific repercussions for such incidents.

  • For a first offense, institutions will face an "automatic minimum $100,000 fine" and receive a "formal warning." This allows the institution to "immediately address the behavior and prevent further incidents."
  • Should a second "confirmed incident" occur within the same game, a "competitive penalty" will be applied. Examples include a "15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty in football or an unsportsmanlike two-shot technical foul in basketball."
  • Individuals ejected from an event due to similar conduct will be "prohibited from attending all athletic events for the remainder of the academic year and are subject to applicable University fan/student conduct policies."

This approach is seen by many as an appropriate response to the specific situation. However, there is a potential concern that the policy could be excessively applied if the conference begins to penalize typical student behavior and chants, rather than reserving enforcement for instances where conduct clearly exceeds acceptable limits, as was observed during the UCF-BYU game.

The Knights' home supporters will have an opportunity to demonstrate a more positive atmosphere on Friday night when their team hosts Baylor. Meanwhile, BYU is scheduled to host Arizona State on Halloween in Provo. It is anticipated that these upcoming games will likely not present similar concerns regarding fan misconduct.
