Veteran tight end Zach Ertz has officially rejoined the Philadelphia Eagles, with reports confirming his signing to the practice squad on Monday. The move brings the 35-year-old, a key figure in the team's Super Bowl LII triumph, back to the franchise following a sprained MCL injury sustained by starting tight end Dallas Goedert during Sunday's 24-20 win against the Tennessee Titans.
Addressing Offensive Depth
The decision by Eagles general manager Howie Roseman addresses an urgent need for offensive reinforcements. Goedert's injury is anticipated to sideline him for multiple weeks, leaving the team with significant depth challenges at the tight end position. With both Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra currently on injured reserve, the team's available options for quarterback Jalen Hurts had dwindled to developmental player E.J. Jenkins and practice squad veteran Joshua Deguara.
A Legacy in Philadelphia and Recent Play
Prior to his departure in 2021, Ertz was a cornerstone of the Eagles' offense for nine seasons, consistently converting crucial third downs. His 579 receptions place him second in franchise history. He is just 11 catches shy of surpassing Hall of Fame receiver Harold Carmichael's record of 589, which would make him the Eagles' all-time leading pass-catcher.
Ertz spent the 2024 and 2025 campaigns with the division rival Washington Commanders. During his last active season, he recorded 50 receptions for 504 yards and three touchdowns across 13 games before a knee injury prematurely concluded his year.
His placement on the practice squad is expected to allow him time to regain full conditioning, anticipating a likely elevation to the 53-man active roster in the near future.
