Atlanta Hawks Trade Former No. 1 Overall Pick Zaccharie Risacher to Dallas Mavericks
After two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, former top draft selection Zaccharie Risacher has been part of a multi-team trade, heading to the Dallas Mavericks.

Zaccharie Risacher, a player once hailed as the first overall selection in his draft class, has concluded his tenure with the Atlanta Hawks after just two seasons. The 21-year-old forward is now headed to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a recent NBA trade, bringing an early end to Atlanta's investment in the top pick.
The complex transaction, finalized on Sunday, involved three teams. The Atlanta Hawks acquired Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder. In turn, the Thunder received two second-round draft picks. The Dallas Mavericks secured both Risacher and guard Ryan Nembhard from the Hawks, rounding out the multi-faceted deal.
A Rare Departure for a Top Pick
It is uncommon for a No. 1 overall draft selection to be moved so swiftly in their professional career. While immediate draft-night trades are frequent, and notable cases like Andrew Wiggins being traded 57 days post-draft for Kevin Love before ever playing for the Cavaliers exist, a top pick being dealt for purely performance-related reasons after two seasons is a distinct and unusual circumstance.
Risacher's departure after accumulating only 142 career games places him in rare company. Other examples include Markelle Fultz, who was traded from Philadelphia after 33 games over two injury-marred seasons, and Pervis Ellison, who was moved after just one year with Sacramento. However, unlike Fultz, who faced a shoulder condition, or Ellison, who had persistent health concerns, Risacher's exit was not due to injuries. The Hawks simply opted to part ways, concluding their commitment to the top pick after a brief two-year period.
Performance and Draft Class Context
Risacher was part of a draft class that many observers considered underwhelming. Notable names from that year's top 10 included Alex Sarr and Cody Williams. At the time of the draft, Risacher was not a unanimous choice for the first overall selection, with some analysts advocating for Sarr instead.
The perceived weakness of Risacher's draft class was further highlighted by the selection of Victor Wembanyama in the preceding year and the anticipation surrounding Cooper Flagg in the subsequent draft, both highly touted prospects.
Standing 6-foot-8, Risacher entered the league as a lengthy, two-way wing player whose potential was largely linked to his shooting ability. He posted an average of 12.6 points per game during his rookie campaign, a figure that saw a decline to 9.6 points in his second season.
