Yankees Fall to Rays 1-0 in ALDS Opener as Austin Wells' Lone Hit Ends in Costly Out
The Tampa Bay Rays secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Division Series, highlighted by a pivotal baserunning mistake after the Yankees' only hit.

The New York Yankees faced a challenging start to their American League Division Series campaign, falling 1-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 on Saturday night. A critical moment in the eighth inning saw catcher Austin Wells break up a no-hit bid but ultimately get thrown out trying to extend a double into a triple, effectively ending the Yankees' most significant scoring threat.
With two outs in the eighth and the Yankees trailing by a single run, Wells connected for a double down the right-field line, marking New York's sole hit of the contest. However, his decision to push for third base resulted in him being easily tagged out. Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. quickly fielded the ball and relayed it to shortstop Taylor Walls, who then fired to third baseman Junior Caminero, beating Wells to the bag.
This baserunning miscue prevented Ryan McMahon from stepping to the plate with a runner in scoring position, allowing Rays starter Drew Rasmussen to exit the mound after completing eight masterful innings.
Rays Pitching Dominates Yankees Lineup
Drew Rasmussen delivered a stellar performance for the Rays, holding the Yankees to just one hit and two walks while striking out 10 batters over 101 pitches through eight scoreless frames. This outing echoed his earlier season dominance against the New York lineup, when he nearly achieved a no-hitter during Tampa Bay's division-clinching victory at Yankee Stadium.
Following Rasmussen's departure, Bryan Baker took over in the ninth inning. Baker efficiently retired the side, striking out pinch hitter Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice before inducing a groundout from Cody Bellinger. This closed out the combined one-hitter, securing a 1-0 series lead for Tampa Bay.
Aranda's Solo Homer Proves Decisive
The game's only run came in the third inning when Jonathan Aranda launched a Gerrit Cole pitch 417 feet to right-center field for a solo home run. Despite this, Cole kept the Yankees within striking distance, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out five batters over five innings on 82 pitches. He ultimately received no offensive support for his efforts.
The New York bullpen, consisting of Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn, and Brent Headrick, collectively held Tampa Bay hitless over the final three innings, preventing any further scoring. However, the Yankees' offense never managed to solve Rasmussen's pitching.
Offensive Struggles and Series Outlook
The shutout loss represented a stark contrast for a Yankees offense that had recently exploded for 18 runs during their two-game Wild Card Series sweep against the Boston Red Sox. The team continued to play without their captain, Aaron Judge, who was not included on the ALDS roster as he recovers from a right calf strain.
The best-of-five series is scheduled to continue on Monday night at Tropicana Field. Cam Schlittler, who impressively pitched 6⅓ scoreless innings in the Wild Card Series matchup against Boston, is slated to start Game 2 for the Yankees.
