WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert recently distributed a letter to all teams outlining the league's approach to the inclusion of transgender athletes. This communication arrived as two former NBA players publicly declared their intentions to enter the upcoming WNBA Draft, drawing significant attention to the matter.

Commissioner Addresses Inclusivity Concerns

In her memo, Engelbert acknowledged the widespread inquiries regarding transgender athlete involvement in women's basketball, anticipating continued focus on the subject. "I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in women’s basketball, and I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention," Engelbert stated in the document.

She expressed gratitude to those who have responded to media inquiries with careful consideration and professionalism, and elaborated on how the league office is navigating these discussions.

"We recognize that this is a complex and nuanced topic, and we will continue to have important conversations with all of you and the Players Association in the weeks and months ahead," Engelbert wrote. "We also plan to convene additional discussions and offer listening sessions for any team leaders who would like to participate. Your perspectives and feedback are invaluable, and I appreciate those who have already reached out to share their thoughts."

Former NBA Players' Declarations Spark Discussion

The commissioner's memo was issued on the same day that Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, both former professional basketball players in the NBA, announced their plans to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
