The United States men's national soccer team continued its strong run of form, defeating rival Canada 1-0 in an international friendly played in Minnesota.

The latest athletic encounter between the United States and Canada has once again resulted in a victory for the Stars and Stripes. While the U.S. men’s national soccer team’s match against their northern neighbor on Tuesday night in St. Paul, Minnesota, was designated as merely an international friendly, the triumph contributed to a growing list of American successes in various sports this year.
The USMNT defeated Canada by a score of 1-0, concluding their international break with an undefeated record. This stretch marked their initial set of fixtures since a challenging Round of 16 exit to Belgium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Young Talent Steps Up for USMNT
Star player Christian Pulisic was absent from the pitch for the U.S. squad, continuing his recovery from a bone bruise and microfracture sustained during the World Cup loss to Belgium on home soil. However, other players rose to the occasion, securing a crucial victory against a formidable Canadian side that had advanced from Group B into the knockout stages during the summer tournament.
The sole goal for the USMNT came from Justin Ellis, a 19-year-old talent from Florida who plays for Orlando City SC in Major League Soccer. Ellis was called up to the U.S. senior team by manager Mauricio Pochettino for a series of friendlies against Peru, Chile, and Mexico prior to this matchup with Canada. His inclusion was aimed at providing him with valuable international experience. Notably, Uruguay head coach Diego Forlán had visited Ellis the week before, as Ellis is eligible to represent Uruguay on the international stage through his mother.
Despite his youth, Ellis appeared to integrate seamlessly into the U.S. team, confidently converting a cross from World Cup standout Alex Freeman in the 29th minute against Canada. This marked Ellis’s second goal during these friendly matches, having also scored on a free kick in his debut against Peru. Ellis has been characterized as a complete striker, and his promising performances suggest he could be a significant name for the USMNT as they look ahead to future competitions, including potential redemption in the 2030 World Cup.
Undefeated Friendly Campaign Concludes
Before facing Canada, the U.S. team handled their previous friendly opponents with dominant performances. They secured a 4-1 victory over Peru, followed by wins against Chile (4-2) and Mexico (3-0). These players will now return to their respective clubs globally, carrying positive momentum from the continued development under manager Pochettino’s guidance.
Continuing Sports Supremacy Over Canada
The USMNT’s win adds another chapter to a year of American sporting triumphs over Canada. Key highlights include gold medals won by the U.S. in both the men’s and women’s ice hockey tournaments at the Winter Olympics. Furthermore, the U.S. baseball team defeated Canada 5-3 in the group stage of the World Baseball Classic, an event that took place just a month after the Olympic hockey victories.
