A Washington state resident tragically died last weekend after falling a significant distance while traversing a switchback trail on Sauk Mountain, authorities confirmed. Gary Idleburg, 66, of Olympia, is reported to have fallen between 800 and 1,000 feet in the Northern Cascades, situated northeast of Seattle.
The incident occurred last Saturday, with witnesses observing Idleburg's fall. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and initiated life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased. Investigators noted that Idleburg was located in challenging terrain following his fall.
Second Fatality on Sauk Mountain Reported Days Earlier
This tragic event followed closely on the heels of another fatal incident on the same mountain. Just one day prior, on Friday, a missing hiker, 78-year-old Peter Kalapaca, was discovered deceased on a steep section of Sauk Mountain. Kalapaca had been reported missing for a day before his body was located.
The search operation for Kalapaca involved extensive resources, including ground teams, aerial support, K9 units trained for air-scent detection, and specialized mountain rescue personnel. These teams diligently worked into the evening hours to locate him.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement regarding Kalapaca’s passing, conveying their sympathies:
"We extend our deepest condolences to the Kalapaca family and loved ones. While nothing can lessen the loss of a loved one, we are grateful for the extraordinary effort made by everyone involved, which allows some measure of closure for the family."
In the subsequent incident involving Gary Idleburg, witnesses were crucial in directing rescuers to his location after his fall on Saturday.
