Former President Trump Commemorates Independence Day Weekend with Mount Rushmore Return

Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to mark the commencement of America's 250th Independence Day weekend by revisiting Mount Rushmore. This appearance echoes a notable moment from his previous administration, as the White House orchestrates a week of commemorative events at significant national sites across the country.

Trump's prior engagement at a Mount Rushmore fireworks display took place in 2020, which marked the first official fireworks exhibition at the monument since 2009.

Commemorating a National Milestone

In January, Trump issued a presidential directive emphasizing the importance of American history, mandating "a grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026." In line with this, both federal and state entities have organized a summer itinerary of events, including the "Great American State Fair" situated on the National Mall.

Trump formally opened this fair on June 24, having hosted a rally the evening before its official start.

Washington D.C. Festivities and Challenges

The former president is slated to appear on Saturday for the "Salute to America" event, where he is anticipated to address attendees.

Washington, D.C., is currently under an "Extreme Heat Alert" until Sunday morning, with projected temperatures feeling like 105°F or higher, according to the DC Homeland Security & Emergency Management office.

Trump's remarks are expected to commence around 9:00 PM ET, preceding an extensive fireworks display on the National Mall. Administration officials have promoted this as the most substantial fireworks show in the nation's history.

The National Mall has drawn particular scrutiny this year following a series of acts of vandalism targeting the Reflecting Pool and other memorials.

These incidents emerged after Trump directed a restoration and repainting of the Reflecting Pool, which subsequently suffered "razor-blade cuts" to its lining, as reported by the White House.

A Week of Patriotic Engagements

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, Trump was present at the inauguration of the Theodore Roosevelt Library in Medora, North Dakota.

Roosevelt was widely recognized for his profound appreciation for the outdoors, significantly expanding federal protections for natural resources and public lands. His efforts led to the establishment of national parks and monuments, alongside strengthening the U.S. Forest Service.

Trump also signed the "Great American Outdoors Act Reauthorization," which builds upon previous legislation enacted by the 45th and 47th presidents while renewing funding in observance of America’s 250th birthday.
