Trump Exhibited 'Caged Lion' Resolve to Return to WHCA Dinner Ballroom After Shooting, Says Former Press Secretary

Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has provided new details regarding President Donald Trump’s behind-the-scenes response after shots were reportedly fired at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in April.

During a recent interview, Leavitt characterized Trump as being like a “caged animal,” expressing a strong desire to re-enter the ballroom even after narrowly avoiding what was described as a potential assassination attempt.

“He was like a caged lion backstage, just roaring to get out, saying, ‘We’ve got to go back out there,’” Leavitt recalled. “And I was sitting there thinking, ‘I’m not sure I want to go back out there.’”

The incident unfolded minutes after the WHCA Dinner commenced at the Washington Hilton. A man, later identified as Cole Allen from Torrance, California, allegedly entered the hotel armed with weapons.

President Trump and Vice President JD Vance were swiftly escorted from the ballroom by Secret Service agents. Allen was quickly apprehended by Secret Service personnel. Reports indicated that a manifesto attributed to Allen named Trump administration officials as targets, with the exception of FBI Director Kash Patel.

Guests at the gala, an annual event honoring White House correspondents, sought cover under tables as chaos erupted.

Despite the unfolding events, Leavitt stated that the president was resolute about returning to the ballroom and expressed willingness to wait for hours for the proceedings to continue.

“[Trump] was really pressing his security detail with firm questions, asking, ‘Why can’t I go? I will wait all night. I don’t care if it’s 3 in the morning, get it started,’” Leavitt shared.

The former White House spokeswoman further noted that officials even began making arrangements to restart the dinner, highlighting Trump’s impatience to deliver a public statement immediately following the incident.

“He wanted to say something, and the most effective way to do it was in the briefing room, and we did,” Leavitt confirmed.

Aftermath and Future Plans

Later that evening, Trump held a news conference at the White House, joined by senior administration members, where he recounted the details of the shooting incident.

Following the event, the president reiterated his call for the construction of a dedicated ballroom at the White House, aiming to establish a secure venue for official events. Trump ultimately attended the rescheduled WHCA Dinner, which took place in July.
