Thousands of Sailors Stranded as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate, UN Maritime Chief Warns

Thousands of sailors are currently marooned in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz as assaults on commercial vessels intensify, the United Nations' leading maritime authority cautioned recently. This warning coincided with Iran's accusation that the U.S. military leveraged an international emergency radio frequency to intimidate civilian ship personnel.

The alert was issued amidst reports indicating that 24 ships had been targeted in the vital waterway over approximately a two-week period. These incidents highlight escalating concerns regarding maritime security in the region.

There is a double blockade and too many vessels have been attacked, particularly in recent days. Seafarers have continued to perish in these attacks and around 6,000 seafarers remain trapped since the beginning of the conflict,

the official stated, advising against transiting the Strait of Hormuz or endangering seafarers until firm guarantees of safety could be established.

Allegations of Communication Channel Misuse

The warning from the maritime chief followed an October 9 letter submitted to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In this letter, Iran alleged that U.S. military forces operating in the Persian Gulf repeatedly used VHF Channel 16, a globally recognized maritime distress and safety channel, to intimidate Iranian crews.

VHF Channel 16 has been repeatedly occupied for prolonged periods by the United States military forces operating in the Persian Gulf.

the Iranian letter asserted. It further claimed that during these transmissions, Iranian seafarers were addressed in Persian with
