A retiring Southwest Airlines captain experienced an unforgettable moment during his final flight when his daughter, who was serving as his first officer, delivered an emotional tribute that quickly gained widespread attention after being shared on the airline's social media platforms on June 21, coinciding with Father's Day celebrations.

Captain Jim Curtis concluded a remarkable 22-year tenure with Southwest Airlines, a period preceded by 21 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. During her heartfelt speech, his daughter, Julia Curtis, acknowledged her father's profound influence, crediting him as the inspiration behind her own career in aviation and a guiding force throughout her life.

A Career Culmination

Reflecting on the unexpected tribute, Jim Curtis admitted he found it challenging to maintain his composure. "I spent 30 years trying to have a stern profile," he recounted. "And people noticed my lip quivering, and so I was just lucky to be able to keep it together." He described the experience as "tremendous" and confessed he was completely taken by surprise by his daughter's remarks.

Within the airline industry, pilots typically face mandatory retirement upon reaching their 65th birthday. This milestone is often commemorated with a ceremonial final flight, known as a "fini-flight." Julia shared that she had long considered the possibility of flying alongside her father on such a significant occasion.

"I grew up watching him go to work, and to actually have the opportunity to sit there with him and also get to tell my greatest mentor in life how much he means to me was truly special," she expressed.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Looking ahead, Jim expressed his excitement for his daughter's future as she continues to follow in his professional footsteps. For his own retirement, he plans to move to a family farm where he intends to grow walnuts alongside his wife.

Julia attributed her career achievements to the invaluable lessons imparted by her father, particularly emphasizing his insights into the importance of a positive mindset and a strong work ethic.

"The two things you can control are your attitude and your effort," Julia explained, recalling her father's guidance. "And he said, if you show up with a positive attitude and give a good effort with whatever you're doing, good things should follow."
