Suspected Impaired Driver Leads Extensive Police Chase, Culminating in Beach Arrest
A 25-year-old man faces multiple charges after a chaotic pursuit through San Diego culminated in his apprehension on a busy beach Sunday morning.

A man suspected of driving under the influence led law enforcement on an unpredictable chase across San Diego, which concluded with his dramatic arrest on a popular beach Sunday morning. Stunned onlookers watched as officers moved in to take the individual into custody.
Erratic Driving Prompts Initial Police Response
According to authorities, witnesses reported seeing a man operating a tan or gold Nissan Frontier pickup truck performing "donuts" in parking areas, narrowly avoiding other vehicles, and potentially colliding with curbs and a retaining wall. Police units were dispatched to the vicinity within minutes and located the truck heading westbound toward the coastline. An officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver reportedly fled, initiating a pursuit.
Officers ultimately discontinued the initial chase, citing the driver's "increasing wanton disregard to public safety" as the reason. The truck was later sighted again, but the driver allegedly failed to yield for a second time, prompting another pursuit that was also called off by officers.
By this point, the Nissan pickup was being sought in connection with felony evading. Officers then saturated the area in an effort to pinpoint its location.
Airborne Unit Aids in Tracking
Law enforcement subsequently spotted the truck once more, moving at a slow pace. However, officers delayed another attempted stop until the department's Airborne Law Enforcement (ABLE) helicopter was overhead and in a position to track the vehicle from above.
The helicopter maintained surveillance as the Nissan drove onto the beach and proceeded toward the water's edge, police confirmed.
Dramatic Arrest on Crowded Beach
Visual records from the scene show numerous beachgoers observing as officers converged on the pickup truck situated on the sand. The driver, identified by police as 25-year-old Griffin Charles Foy, is seen outside the vehicle with his hands raised as officers approached to detain him. A police K-9 unit was present at the scene but was not deployed during Foy’s arrest, according to authorities.
Police indicated that a high-risk vehicle stop was conducted due to the nature of the alleged offenses and Foy's demonstrated "disregard to public safety." Foy was successfully taken into custody without further incident.
Charges Filed Against Suspect
Foy was subsequently booked into San Diego Central Jail. He faces charges including felony evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and driving under the influence of drugs, as reported by police. Despite the potentially dangerous sequence of events, law enforcement confirmed that no individuals sustained injuries during the chaotic pursuit.
