Pope Leo XIV Denounces Death Penalty as 'Inadmissible' Amid Pentagon Livestream Controversy
The pontiff's condemnation of capital punishment aligns with updated Catholic doctrine and comes as the U.S. military prepares for a potentially livestreamed execution.

Pope Leo XIV has publicly denounced capital punishment as "inadmissible," a statement that comes amid rising controversy over the Pentagon's intention to livestream a military execution later this year.
On Saturday, coinciding with World Day Against the Death Penalty, the first American pontiff articulated his firm stance against capital punishment through a social media declaration.
His remarks referenced the updated Catholic doctrine, instituted by his predecessor, Pope Francis, which underscores that capital punishment fundamentally infringes upon human dignity.
The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption.
He further emphasized his message with the hashtag "#NoDeathPenalty."
The Evolution of Catholic Teaching on Capital Punishment
The Catholic Church's official stance on capital punishment was formally amended in 2018 under Pope Francis, definitively declaring the death penalty "inadmissible" in every situation.
The revised Catechism states: "Consequently the church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person."
Prior to this modification, Catholic theology had allowed for capital punishment in specific circumstances, particularly when it was considered the sole viable method to safeguard human life from exceptionally dangerous criminals.
While earlier popes had maintained this exception, Pope John Paul II increasingly advocated for the abolition of capital punishment, stressing that individuals convicted of crimes still retain their inherent human dignity.
Pentagon's Planned Execution and Public Reaction
While Pope Leo's statement did not directly reference the U.S. government's intentions, his pronouncement closely followed the Pentagon's announcement last Thursday regarding a scheduled firing squad execution for an individual convicted of a mass shooting at a military installation.
The condemned individual, Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, received a conviction for the 2009 shooting spree at Fort Hood military base, which resulted in the deaths of 13 people and injuries to 32 others. His execution is slated for December 3 at Fort Hood, and if carried out by firing squad, it would mark the first such military execution in the United States since 1945.
The plan to potentially livestream the execution has drawn significant criticism. President Donald Trump indicated on Saturday that he had not yet made a final decision on whether to permit the livestreaming initiative, championed by Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, to proceed.
Vice President JD Vance, a practicing Catholic, expressed skepticism regarding the Pentagon's likelihood of moving forward with a public execution and stated he would not view the livestream if it occurred.
Several legislators, including members of the Republican party, have publicly opposed the proposal to broadcast the execution.
Public executions are what oppressive dictatorships like Iran and Afghanistan do. It should not be happening in America.<
Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, remarked on Thursday.
Vatican and U.S. Bishops Voice Strong Opposition
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's secretary of state, voiced strong disapproval of the proposed broadcast, describing it as "truly incomprehensible" and cautioning against the "unacceptable" act of transforming death into a public spectacle.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Parolin stated:
The Church’s position is one of total opposition to the death penalty; it is incompatible with human dignity and serves as no deterrent. It is truly incomprehensible that anyone would want to use this system today — I don’t know for what purpose. It is certainly unacceptable to turn death into a spectacle; even if the person is guilty, of course, there are other methods.
Parolin reiterated that capital punishment "is incompatible with human dignity and does not serve as a deterrent."
Archbishop Paul Coakley, who leads the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, conveyed his "shock" and "great sorrow" concerning the public execution plan, urging the U.S. government to reconsider.
In no way can Hasan’s actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.
Archbishop Coakley asserted in a statement on Friday.
Separately, Pope Leo's statement did not address the recent botched lethal injection attempt on Christa Gail Pike in Tennessee, where Pike reportedly survived despite receiving two doses of pentobarbital late last month.
