Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday has indicated that his office is evaluating potential actions against Penn State University after law enforcement agencies uncovered an alleged cocaine trafficking network reportedly operating within the institution's fraternity system.
Investigators detailed that approximately one kilogram of cocaine was allegedly moved through the illicit operation every other month. During a recent press conference, Sunday characterized the network as an "upper-level trafficking organization," underscoring its significant scale and structure.
"This was a very sophisticated endeavor. This wasn't just a couple kids at college who were sharing drugs with each other," Sunday stated. "It was a lot of drugs and it was done in a very serious and very sophisticated manner."
A total of fourteen individuals, comprising both current and former Penn State students, are facing felony or misdemeanor charges. These charges stem from alleged illicit activities that occurred between 2023 and 2024.
Details of the Trafficking Operation
Prosecutors have identified Agostino Abbatiello, 24, and Thomas Robinson, 23, as the suspected orchestrators of the alleged drug ring. These individuals reportedly undertook regular journeys to major cities like Philadelphia and New York to acquire "large quantities" of powdered cocaine. The distribution and sales were allegedly arranged through the social media platform Snapchat, with payments frequently processed via Venmo.
The Attorney General also highlighted the alleged involvement of pledges from the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities. These pledges were reportedly instructed to cut and package cocaine as part of their initiation rituals. Sunday pointed to peer pressure as a significant factor influencing their participation.
"When you're young… and this isn't an excuse but, peer pressure is one of the most powerful forms of motivation in the world," Sunday remarked. "And there's a lot of peer pressure that was involved here."
University Response and Historical Context
Penn State University has publicly expressed its distress over the accusations, stating it is "horrified" by the allegations. In response, the Delta Upsilon fraternity has been placed on an interim suspension. It was also noted that Sigma Chi is not officially recognized by the university and operates independently of its oversight.
These recent allegations emerge nearly a decade after a separate fraternity-related incident brought intense national scrutiny upon Penn State. In 2017, Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old student, tragically died after consuming excessive amounts of alcohol during a hazing event at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Regarding the current situation, Attorney General Sunday conveyed his expectations for the university's response.
"My hope is that Penn State will take the appropriate actions under these circumstances," he said. "Up to this point, the university has been very open to collaboration. And that is my hope and belief moving forward, that maybe we can help remedy some of these issues collectively and collaboratively together."
