Carolina Panthers Offensive Line Faces Mounting Challenges as Taylor Moton Diagnosed with Blood Clot

After concluding a successful season that saw them reclaim the top spot in the NFC South for the first time in a decade, the Carolina Panthers are entering 2026 with heightened expectations. Their previous campaign culminated in a thrilling home wild-card game against the Los Angeles Rams. However, the team's pursuit of a consecutive division title now faces a significant hurdle, as their offensive line grapples with a series of setbacks, notably the absence of key veteran Taylor Moton.

The unit responsible for protecting quarterback Bryce Young, the former No. 1 overall draft pick, sustained another blow this week. Taylor Moton, the Panthers' experienced starting right tackle, has been placed on the non-football injury (NFI) list and will be unavailable for the start of the regular season in September. Moton, 31, was diagnosed in late June with a blood clot in his left lung, a development the team confirmed on Tuesday.

Key Offensive Linemen Sidelined

Moton's injury is not an isolated incident for the Panthers' offensive front. Starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is currently recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee, an injury sustained during the team's playoff appearance. Ekwonu also underwent emergency appendectomy surgery last August, adding to his recent medical history.

Moton's move to the NFI list places him alongside two-time Pro Bowl defensive back Jaycee Horn. Horn himself was added to the NFI list recently after sustaining a foot cut while running. Last season, the cornerback appeared in 16 games, though he did miss a Week 12 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

Following his diagnosis, Moton began treatment with blood thinners, and the team reports that he has responded positively to the medication. Carolina's medical staff is maintaining daily monitoring of the veteran lineman's condition.

Addressing Depth and Future Prospects

In anticipation of potential issues, the Panthers had already taken steps to reinforce their offensive line. In March, the team signed veteran tackle Rasheed Walker, providing a potential contingency plan for Ekwonu's left tackle position. Moton's current absence could now create an opportunity on the right side for Monroe Freeling, an offensive tackle selected by Carolina with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Panthers had been proactive in bolstering the left side of their offensive line, securing Rasheed Walker as an insurance policy for Ekwonu. The subsequent month saw the franchise further invest in its front by drafting Monroe Freeling in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, indicating a strategic focus on depth and future talent.

Moton, who was drafted by the Panthers in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan, has been a consistent presence for the team, spending all nine seasons of his professional career in Carolina.
