Oregon Overcomes Early Deficit to Edge Boise State in Season Opener

The second-ranked Oregon Ducks faced an unexpected challenge in their 2026 college football season debut on Saturday, ultimately prevailing 34-27 against an unranked Boise State team. Despite entering the home opener as significant favorites, Oregon found itself in a tight contest, tied at 27 points apiece late in the fourth quarter.

The decisive play came when quarterback Dante Moore connected with wide receiver Dakorien Moore for a spectacular 62-yard touchdown pass, putting Oregon ahead permanently. This crucial score allowed the Ducks to secure the win and extend their national-best home winning streak against nonconference opponents to 39 games.

Broncos Deliver Early Challenge

Boise State, now part of the reconfigured Pac-12 Conference after a 9-5 season in the Mountain West, demonstrated its intent from the outset. The Broncos opened the scoring on their first possession, with quarterback Maddux Madsen delivering a 13-yard touchdown pass to Cam Bates, culminating an 11-play drive. Oregon responded in the second quarter when Jordon Davison powered in a 1-yard run to level the score.

However, the Broncos quickly regained momentum. Following an Evan Stewart muffed punt that Boise State recovered, Sire Gaines hauled in a 37-yard reception for another touchdown. Kicker Canaan Moore added to Boise State's lead with a 29-yard field goal, leaving Oregon trailing with less than three minutes remaining before halftime. Yet, the Ducks managed to narrow the gap to 17-14 just before the break, as Dante Moore found Jamari Johnson for a 27-yard touchdown pass with only 19 seconds left.

Second Half Back-and-Forth

In the second half, Oregon initially took its first lead of the game. A 26-yard field goal from Gage Hurych was followed by Jeremiah McClellan's 8-yard touchdown reception. However, Boise State proved resilient, tying the game once more before the close of the third quarter on a 7-yard scoring pass from Madsen to Matt Wagner.

The fourth quarter saw both teams exchange field goals, with Hurych and Canaan Moore each splitting the uprights, keeping the score deadlocked. It was after this exchange that Dakorien Moore's long touchdown catch ultimately broke the tie and sealed the victory for the Ducks.

For Boise State, quarterback Maddux Madsen delivered a notable performance, completing the game with 181 passing yards and three touchdowns. This showing builds on his strong previous season, where he accumulated 2,334 yards and 18 touchdowns. Despite the loss, Madsen's play suggests a promising season ahead for the Broncos.

Looking ahead, Oregon will travel to Stillwater next week for a clash against Oklahoma State. Boise State is set to host Memphis in their Week 2 matchup.
