Brooklyn Sees NYPD Detective and Four Children Wounded in Separate Holiday Weekend Shootings
A New York City police detective was shot in Crown Heights, while four children and several adults were injured in a separate Coney Island incident during a violent Fourth of July weekend.

A New York City police detective and four children were among several individuals who sustained injuries in distinct shooting incidents across Brooklyn during a violent Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Detective Robert Karroll, assigned to the NYPD's Sex Offender Monitoring Unit, was struck in the back of his ballistic vest during an encounter with an armed 18-year-old in Crown Heights early Sunday morning. This information was confirmed by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch at a subsequent news conference.
Police Detective Shot in Crown Heights
Detective Karroll was transported to Kings County Hospital, where he is anticipated to make a full recovery. A second officer involved in the incident suffered contusions to the face and shoulder.
Commissioner Tisch stated that officers from a mobile field force detail were positioned in an unmarked police vehicle near Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place around 4:14 a.m. ET when an individual approached their car. The circumstances surrounding the approach remain unclear, as there was no body-worn camera footage of the event, with Tisch noting the shooting occurred "quickly and unexpectedly."
Following the approach, officers exited their vehicle and attempted to engage the armed suspect. Three officers discharged their weapons, though the suspect was not hit. The police vehicle sustained ballistic damage, including bullet holes in both the front and rear windshields, as well as on the passenger side.
The suspect was apprehended several blocks away, near Rogers Avenue and Union Street, after a foot chase. Tisch reported that the individual resisted arrest and refused to be handcuffed, leading officers to deploy a taser before taking him into custody. A SAR 9mm firearm was recovered at the scene.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed relief at the news conference, stating, "I'm relieved that the officer, Detective Robert Karroll, was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured as a result of it." The mayor also acknowledged Karroll as "a husband and father of three children."
Multiple Victims, Including Children, in Coney Island
Hours prior to the incident involving the detective, at least eight people were injured in a shooting in Coney Island. The victims included two men, two women, and four children, aged 14, 12, 7, and 6. All were transported to local hospitals.
Police reported that seven of the victims were in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman was listed in critical condition.
Official Reactions and Ongoing Investigation
Scott Munro, President of the Detectives' Endowment Association, condemned the wave of violence during a Sunday morning news conference.
"This has to stop," Munro asserted. "Three weeks ago we had a detective shot – in the same hospital. This has to stop. Our members are out there day and night hours and hours protecting the people of the city of New York doing a job that they took an oath to take and they need to be respected and thank God this detective is going home."
He conveyed immense relief, adding that "we're not planning a funeral today."
Commissioner Tisch explained that the officers involved in the Crown Heights shooting had been reassigned to the area shortly before midnight as part of the department’s Fourth of July violence reduction plan, which specifically targets ongoing crew violence.
Investigators are currently canvassing nearby businesses for surveillance footage, as there was no body-camera video documenting the shooting itself.
