NFL Sunday Ticket's Value Under Scrutiny Amid Expanding National Broadcast Schedule and Rising Costs

Subscribers to NFL Sunday Ticket, YouTube's exclusive service for viewing out-of-market National Football League games, may have recently received notifications regarding renewals or new subscriptions. Many have likely noted the package's substantial price, which some argue is becoming less justifiable each year as the NFL continues to broaden its national broadcast windows.

This trend effectively diminishes the number of games exclusively available through the Sunday Ticket package.

Shifting Broadcast Landscape Reduces Value

The NFL's television scheduling has grown increasingly complex, contributing to a reduction in Sunday Ticket's perceived value. For instance, local market restrictions mean that fans in Michigan, for example, cannot watch Detroit Lions games via Sunday Ticket if those matchups are airing locally on broadcast networks like CBS or FOX.

Each time the NFL strikes a deal for a new national broadcast window, it removes a game that would otherwise have been part of the traditional Sunday early or late-afternoon slate. The consequence for Sunday Ticket subscribers is a package offering fewer games, often at a higher cost.

New Platforms and Non-Traditional Game Days

The league's expansion into new platforms and non-traditional game days further complicates the viewing landscape. This season, Netflix is set to carry five NFL games:

  • A Thursday night contest between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, originating from Australia in Week 1.
  • The inaugural Thanksgiving Eve matchup featuring the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams.
  • Two games scheduled for Christmas Day.
  • An additional unannounced Saturday game later in the season.

The introduction of a Thanksgiving Eve game signifies the NFL's foray into Wednesday play. This scheduling shift has broader implications, as NBC will consequently move its New England Patriots-Seattle Seahawks season opener to Wednesday, September 9, 2026, to accommodate these changes.

Furthermore, the NFL plans to host four Friday games this season:

  • The Green Bay Packers versus the Chicago Bears on Netflix.
  • The Buffalo Bills versus the Denver Broncos, also on Netflix.
  • The Los Angeles Rams versus the Seattle Seahawks on FOX on Christmas Day.
  • The Denver Broncos versus the Pittsburgh Steelers on Amazon Prime on Black Friday.

In total, the league will play six games on Wednesdays and Fridays this season, days it historically avoided, partly due to legal considerations. Additionally, nine of the league's 18 weeks will feature an international game, with most airing on NFL Network at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Pricing Structure and Diminished Offerings

While the general price for NFL Sunday Ticket is approximately $480, this figure can be somewhat misleading as the NFL often promotes lower prices as discounts. Various groups are eligible for reduced rates through ID.me, including teachers, military members, veterans, first responders, and medical workers, who can purchase the package for $198 annually. Eligible students can access it for $119, though their streaming is limited to a single device.

Despite these discounts, the argument persists that the dwindling number of exclusive games, due to the scheduling changes mentioned, no longer justifies the expense. Many of the week's most anticipated matchups are increasingly broadcast on other platforms.

Who Still Benefits from Sunday Ticket?

At this juncture, Sunday Ticket appears most appealing to fans who reside outside the local market of their favorite team. However, even this appeal can vary significantly depending on the specific team a fan supports.

For instance, teams such as the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, and Las Vegas Raiders currently have no traditional primetime games scheduled for the upcoming season, though this could change with late-season flexing. For fans of these teams living in a different state, Sunday Ticket might be the sole reliable method to watch their team weekly.

Conversely, teams like the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Green Bay Packers are each scheduled for at least six primetime appearances. These prominent teams are also likely to be heavily featured in the 1 p.m. and 4:25 p.m. windows broadly available across the country, provided a local team isn't airing simultaneously on the same channel. Consequently, a Chiefs fan in North Carolina would likely not require Sunday Ticket to follow their team most weeks, whereas a Titans fan in Arizona likely would.

The NFL's strategy of expanding its national broadcast reach has inadvertently led to a reduced value proposition for Sunday Ticket. As the league continues to create more national viewing opportunities, the demand for the exclusive out-of-market package may decline unless there is a corresponding adjustment in its pricing.
