Incumbent Republican Secures Nomination in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, Prepares for Contested General Election
Representative Brad Finstad will advance to the November general election after winning the Republican primary in a district previously held by current Governor Tim Walz.

Republican voters in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District have reaffirmed their support for the incumbent, Representative Brad Finstad, selecting him as their nominee for the upcoming U.S. House race. Finstad easily defeated his challengers, Gregory Goetzman and Oliver Morlan, in Tuesday's primary election.
This marks a second attempt for Goetzman, who previously ran against Finstad in 2024, securing only 4.26% of the vote compared to Finstad's dominant 90.9%. Morlan, who operates a family industrial cleaning business, positioned himself as an outsider candidate in the contest.
District Overview and November Contestants
The 1st Congressional District is one of Minnesota's eight U.S. House seats and one of the four currently held by Republicans. It encompasses a significant portion of southern Minnesota, stretching across agricultural areas and including the city of Rochester.
With his primary victory, Representative Finstad will now prepare for the November general election. He awaits the outcome of the Democratic primary, which features Alex Eaton, a math teacher and former teachers' union leader, and Jake Johnson, a small business owner. Eaton is generally seen as representing the party's establishment wing, while Johnson is considered the more progressive contender.
Electoral Trends and Historical Context
The political outlook for the 1st District, according to the non-partisan Cook Political Report, is currently categorized as 'lean Republican.' This represents a shift from its previous 'solid Republican' designation in prior election cycles, reflecting a broader trend of Minnesota's political landscape, particularly in urban centers, moving toward more left-leaning ideologies.
Representative Finstad first assumed office in the U.S. House after winning a special election in 2022. This election was prompted by the death of his Republican predecessor, Representative Jim Hagedorn. Hagedorn passed away on February 17, 2022, following a battle with kidney cancer, which he had been undergoing treatment for since 2019, and after testing positive for COVID-19 in January 2022.
Prior to Hagedorn, the congressional seat was held by Democrat Tim Walz, who departed from Congress after his successful election as governor in 2018. Governor Walz continues to serve in his current capacity, having previously run an unsuccessful campaign for vice president alongside then-Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Governor Walz announced on January 5, 2026, that he would not seek re-election.
Key Issues and General Election Outlook
Historically, Minnesota's 1st Congressional District has shown a willingness to elect candidates from both major parties, though it has leaned Republican in recent election cycles. As the race progresses toward November, several key issues are anticipated to dominate the campaign discourse. These include agriculture, healthcare policy, manufacturing, and the overall state of the economy.
The Republican and Democratic nominees will engage in a competitive race this November, vying for the opportunity to represent southern Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives.
