When the Mets dismissed Carlos Mendoza on June 26, following a disappointing 34-47 start to the season, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns had publicly stated that Green was strictly a temporary solution. Green, who had been serving as the senior vice president of player development, was expected to return to his front-office duties at the season's conclusion, with the organization committing to a thorough external search for a new permanent manager.

Unexpected Turn in Managerial Search

However, three months later, Stearns completely reversed course. The organization opted to forgo any external interviews and instead secured Green’s services through the 2029 season. Rather than engaging with established managers such as Alex Cora, Bob Melvin, or Joe Espada, or exploring the market for experienced figures like Torey Lovullo, Don Mattingly, Rocco Baldelli, or Dave Martinez, Stearns chose an expedited path.

This swift appointment has reportedly pushed fan patience with Stearns and the team to a critical low point. Stearns arrived in Queens with a reputation as an analytical strategist, expected to build a consistently competitive team backed by owner Steve Cohen's substantial financial resources. The recent managerial decision, however, has led some to question the strategic direction, perceiving it as an improvised move rather than a well-considered plan, a sentiment frequently associated with the team's past management choices.

A Questionable Track Record

Green’s past managerial experience does not readily inspire widespread confidence. His previous tenure as manager of the San Diego Padres concluded with a mid-season dismissal after four consecutive losing seasons. Prior to this year, his career managerial record stood at an unfavorable 274-366.

The frustration among supporters in Queens extends beyond Green’s appointment; it encompasses the perceived disregard for the fanbase given the team's performance this season. The Mets concluded the year at the bottom of the NL East standings with a disappointing 71-85 record.

Franchise Performance and Fan Disappointment

Despite boasting one of Major League Baseball’s highest payrolls, New York’s playoff hopes effectively vanished before the All-Star break. Carlos Mendoza led the team to a 34-47 record before his departure, and Green’s subsequent interim period saw the team finish with a 37-38 record.
