The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts experienced a partial ceiling collapse in its main hallway on Saturday, an incident attributed to a rainstorm. The facility, which is more than five decades old, released photographs of the damage.
Roma Daravi, Vice President of Public Relations for the Kennedy Center, stated that the incident underscores the urgency for the building's proposed closure and subsequent renovations.
Renovation Plans and Naming Controversies
This event occurs amidst ongoing efforts by the center's board, chaired by Donald Trump, which voted in August to implement a two-year closure for extensive refurbishment.
The board's renovation plans follow a May judicial ruling that mandated the removal of Donald Trump's name from the institution. This ruling came months after the board had voted to officially designate the facility as "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts."
In response to previous developments, Donald Trump expressed his views on Truth Social at the time, stating:
Unless I am free to do what I do better than anyone else, bring this Institution back, physically, financially, and artistically, I have no interest in continuing what could only be a hopeless journey into 'NEVER NEVER LAND.' Therefore, based on the fact that the Radical Left Democrats care more about opposing your favorite President, ME, than saving a dying Performing Arts Center, almost all of which lose large amounts of money throughout the Country, we are going to be working with Congress to transfer this failing Institution back to them so they can make a determination as to what to do with it.
Last month, the board made further decisions regarding naming, voting to designate the institution's grounds as "President Donald J. Trump Plaza." Additionally, they approved plans for new lettering on the building, which would read: "The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump."
The board is currently engaged in legal proceedings to advance these proposed name changes, the two-year closure, and the comprehensive $250 million renovation project.
Community Opposition and Recent Developments
Grace Terpstra, who founded the community advocacy group "Keep the KC" to oppose the proposed closure, expressed her concern that the board might leverage the recent collapse. She believes they will use it "to make the point that the whole thing needs to be shut down, that it’s going to fall on everybody."
Terpstra added, "I think they’ll try to make it into a bigger thing and show that they’ve found a lot of other things."
The front of the building has been covered by a tarp and scaffolding since June, following the removal of the bronze letters spelling out Trump's name.
In a separate development last week, the center removed a modern art installation titled "Blue," which had been displayed outside the building since 2019. In a statement, the center acknowledged, "we are honored to have been stewards" of the late sculptor Joel Shapiro's creation.
