Vice President Kamala Harris recently utilized a vivid flower analogy to elucidate the mechanics of social media algorithms, asserting that these technological systems possess the capacity to shape the content individuals encounter online.
Her observations came during an appearance on "Off Air with Big Boy," where the host, Big Boy, initiated a discussion encompassing artificial intelligence, platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and the potential influence of personalized algorithms on how Americans process information, particularly in the lead-up to midterm elections.
Understanding Algorithm Targeting
Harris emphasized the importance of recognizing repetitive content as a sign of targeted engagement.
"There is a part of this that is about understanding that, you know, if you keep seeing the same thing over and over again, know that you are being targeted," Harris stated.
She elaborated on the mechanism, suggesting that initial engagement with certain content prompts algorithms to continuously deliver similar material. Harris expressed concern that this approach could underestimate users' intellectual curiosity and broader interests.
"Because you looked at it the first time, they're just going to keep sending it to you, which means they're trying to dumb people down with the assumption that people don't have any interest beyond what they've already seen," she continued.
Having previously been a key figure in the Biden administration's initiatives regarding artificial intelligence, Harris proceeded to offer her distinctive botanical illustration.
"The algorithm's suggesting I have no more interest — because I'm looking at this yellow flower, I'm only interested in yellow flowers, as though my brain can't handle the fact that there may be a pink flower that I might be interested in looking at," Harris explained, drawing a parallel to algorithmic limitations.
She concluded her point by stressing the need for users to grasp how these systems operate.
"Part of it is understanding how the algorithm is manipulating us and figuring out how we're going to psych it out a bit," she added.
Harris's Broader Engagement with AI
The Vice President, who is the Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nominee, has faced scrutiny regarding her explanations of artificial intelligence in the past. In 2023, while serving as Vice President, she offered a description of AI that drew attention.
"AI is kind of a fancy thing," Harris remarked at the time. "First of all, it's two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it's about machine learning."
Her most recent comments follow a call she made earlier this month for an international accord, including participation from China, aimed at restricting hazardous applications of artificial intelligence and establishing global benchmarks for testing the technology.
Harris has not yet indicated whether she plans to pursue the presidency again in the 2028 election cycle.
