Former NFL kicker Jay Feely has emerged victorious in the Republican primary for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, securing the GOP nomination for a pivotal open seat. His win, bolstered by a strong endorsement from former President Donald Trump, positions him in a highly contested race that is expected to play a key role in determining the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Feely Secures Republican Nomination

Feely triumphed over former state legislator Joseph Chaplik and businessman John Trobough in the Republican contest. The primary was held to select a candidate to succeed Representative David Schweikert, a Republican who sought the governorship but did not succeed in his own primary election on Tuesday.

In the critical final days leading up to the primary, former President Trump provided his "complete and total endorsement" to Feely through a video message. Trump characterized Feely as a "true America First conservative" and encouraged voters to support him in the July 21 election. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) also included Feely in its "MAGA Majority" initiative, a program designed to back candidates aligned with the "America First" agenda in key battleground districts.

A Crucial Battleground District

Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, encompassing parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area, is recognized by both major parties as a highly competitive region for the upcoming November general election. This district covers northeastern Maricopa County and significant portions of communities such as Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Fountain Hills, according to information from Arizona PBS candidate forums.

Controversial Exchange During Campaign

The Republican primary campaign saw a contentious turn in its concluding weeks, particularly when Joseph Chaplik posted on X, accusing Feely of having "imported Haitians." Feely publicly condemned the remark, as reported by Axios Phoenix, stating it was racist and targeted at Haitian men he regards as family members.

Feely, who has dedicated years to humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake, has consistently defended his work as philanthropic rather than political. He explained to Axios Phoenix that he facilitated the entry of two young Haitian men—a translator he collaborated with and the translator’s brother—into the United States. Feely considers these individuals part of his family and has also sought to assist several of their relatives in relocating.

Path to the General Election

Feely now moves forward to the general election, participating in one of the nation's most closely observed House contests. Republicans are focused on retaining the seat currently held by Schweikert, while Democrats aim to leverage the open race in a district that has consistently proven competitive in recent electoral cycles. The Democratic field for Arizona's 1st Congressional District includes former state legislator Amish Shah and former television news anchor Marlene Galán-Woods, who are considered the frontrunners, alongside Rick McCartney and Jonathan Treble.
