Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is facing a significant health challenge, having been placed on injured reserve due to a blood clot. This designation mandates a minimum four-game absence, though the team has indicated he is out "indefinitely" to ensure the clot fully resolves.
Strict Medical Clearance Required for Quarterback's Return
Reports indicate that the Eagles are taking an extremely cautious approach, with one sports analyst stating the team would only clear Hurts to play if the blood clot "completely melted." Initially, the clot was described as superficial and stationary, which allowed Hurts to participate in the recent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
"At first, the blood clot was superficial; it wasn’t moving around," the analyst explained. "But once it changed and that blood clot started moving, you do not mess around with a moving blood clot. That could be a life-or-death situation."
The path to a potential return this season is contingent on the clot's complete disappearance, requiring "several different scans to make sure it’s completely gone." The analyst emphasized the severe risks involved, warning that if the clot remains and travels to critical areas, it "would be very, very dangerous."
Medical Experts Weigh In on Blood Clot Risks
A former team physician for the Los Angeles Chargers, Dr. David Chao, who served the franchise for 17 years during its tenure in San Diego, recently echoed concerns about the movement of blood clots. Dr. Chao highlighted the critical distinction in the clot's nature:
"Do they mean movement as in it's propagating and it's now a bigger superficial blood clot? Or is it movement meaning it's deeper and it's a deep vein clot?" he posed.
He further elaborated that if Hurts is diagnosed with a deep vein clot, his recovery timeline would extend significantly, likely sidelining him for "multiple weeks, at least."
Eagles Navigate Divisional Schedule Without Starting Quarterback
In Hurts' absence, backup quarterback Tanner McKee stepped in for his inaugural start of the season this past Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. The Eagles ultimately lost the NFC matchup 25-14. During the game, McKee completed passes for 215 yards, including a touchdown throw to wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
The team is set to compete without Hurts for several crucial upcoming contests. These include a "Monday Night Football" game against the Dallas Cowboys, a "Sunday Night Football" showdown with the Washington Commanders, and a divisional clash against the New York Giants. All three matchups are critical NFC East divisional games.
Additional Roster Challenges for Philadelphia
Beyond Hurts' situation, the 2026 season has presented Philadelphia with numerous other injury concerns. Running back Saquon Barkley was sidelined for another game this Sunday due to a hamstring injury. Fellow running backs Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley are also contending with various ailments. Compounding these issues, veteran offensive lineman Lane Johnson unexpectedly announced his retirement midway through the season.
