A 10-hour manhunt in Georgia concluded Tuesday evening with the arrest of a suspect accused of serious domestic offenses, thanks in part to the tracking abilities of a specialized bloodhound K-9 unit.
The individual taken into custody was identified as Darian Berry Sr., 46, who authorities noted is a convicted felon, according to information released by the Butts County Sheriff’s Office.
Details of the Incident
The domestic disturbance unfolded on Tuesday morning within the city of Flovilla, a community located approximately 50 miles south of Atlanta, officials reported.
“He made the choice to run, but he could not outrun the determination of law enforcement or the incredible tracking ability of the bloodhounds that ultimately helped bring him into custody,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Deputies initially responded to reports of a domestic incident involving Berry. According to the charges, Berry allegedly attempted to confine or restrict his victim, and was also accused of arson and stalking.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Berry reportedly fled the scene on foot. He was believed to be armed with a handgun, which prompted a substantial search effort across the area. Local residents were advised to be on the lookout for the suspect as authorities worked to locate him.
K-9 Unit Instrumental in Capture
Officials confirmed that a bloodhound from the Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 Unit played a crucial role in assisting authorities to pinpoint Berry’s location. He was successfully taken into custody by Tuesday evening.
Berry now faces an array of charges, including aggravated assault, stalking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, obstruction, two counts of arson, battery, family violence, and false imprisonment.
