A Florida couple recently shared their astonishing account of survival after being struck by lightning during an evening walk earlier this month. Aaron and Clare describe their rescue and subsequent recovery as nothing short of a miracle, attributing their lives to the swift actions of several Good Samaritans.
The incident occurred on September 2, after the couple had dropped their three children off at a weekly church youth group. "I couldn't move the way I wanted to," Aaron recalled. "I'm trying to get up. I am trying to get to Clare … I'm trying to talk, and I'm not really able to."
An Unexpected Evening Stroll Turns Catastrophic
The couple had turned their children's church gathering into an opportunity for a "date night." "We dropped our kids off at church, and we use that as our date night, and we looked forward to it," Aaron explained. "So we went out and had dinner and then, we love to go for a walk."
As they walked hand-in-hand along the popular West Orange Trail, a storm quickly developed nearby. Without warning, a bolt of lightning struck them. Aaron's next memory was waking up in intense pain and confusion.
"My first thought was that we got hit by a car," he said. "I thought maybe a car just ran us over from behind because getting struck by lightning is nothing that would even enter our minds."
Still disoriented, Aaron observed bystanders and emergency personnel attending to his wife, who was unresponsive.
Heroic Bystanders and Rapid Recovery
Four Good Samaritans immediately rushed to the scene. They promptly called 911 and began performing CPR on Clare before first responders arrived approximately ten minutes later. Witnesses reported that Clare had turned blue and ceased breathing for an estimated three to four minutes.
Aaron expressed profound admiration for their rescuers. "I like to talk about the amount of bravery that they showed . . . they could see the fence beside them that lit up," he stated. "It was a big moment to turn around and then go, 'Hey, I think we need to go that direction.' And they did."
Upon hospitalization, Aaron was diagnosed with fractured eye sockets, a broken nose, damaged teeth, facial cuts, and burns on his hand and wrists, where he had been holding an umbrella and wearing an Apple Watch.
Despite the severe nature of their injuries, both Aaron and Clare describe their recovery as "miraculous." They sustained serious conditions, including brain bleeds and heart damage, which they say completely resolved within two days.
"We're just seeing miracle after miracle and just too many divine things in this unfortunate circumstance to not be noted," Clare remarked. "We both had brain bleeds, and then I also suffered heart damage. And then when they followed up again two days later, it was healed. Neither of us had any brain bleed damage and my heart situation completely healed."
Clare, who initially experienced intermittent memory loss, fully regained her memory after about two days.
Community Support and Enduring Faith
Clare shared her immense gratitude for being alive, stating, "God's not done with me yet."
Since the harrowing event, the couple and their family have forged a strong bond with the Good Samaritans who intervened. They are even planning to revisit the trail with their rescuers in the coming weeks.
The family has been deeply moved by the outpouring of support from their local church, neighborhood, and school communities. Their pastor ensured their children were safely brought home on the night of the lightning strike.
"Our neighbors are taking care of our yard and our pool for us, so it's just so many things happening without us even asking," Aaron shared. "It's very humbling to know that people out there really care for you, and to see the church the way it's supposed to be, where it's not just in a building. It's really the people that are around you, and it's been amazing to watch."
Throughout the entire ordeal, the couple maintained their faith, crediting it with providing strength and hope. "We've never asked ‘Why me?’" Aaron concluded. "We never got upset, we never felt hopeless. We really felt like even though it was a hard situation . . . God's been with us and there's a purpose behind it."
