Mexican National Faces Federal Charges After Customs Officers Uncover $238K in Fentanyl Inside Electric Moped

United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers recently intercepted over 16 pounds of fentanyl, with an estimated street value approaching $240,000, meticulously hidden within an electric moped attempting to cross into the U.S. from Mexico, according to official reports.

A 22-year-old Mexican national is now facing federal charges following the significant drug seizure, which occurred earlier this month.

On August 3, the individual was operating a 2024 Revoo electric moped when he sought entry into the United States. During the admission process, CBP personnel referred the moped for a more thorough secondary inspection.

Utilizing a nonintrusive imaging system, officers detected unusual anomalies located beneath the rear section of the moped. A subsequent alert from a CBP canine further indicated the presence of contraband in the area.

A detailed physical examination then revealed seven distinct packages. These packages contained a total of 16.53 pounds of white fentanyl powder, which authorities have estimated to be worth approximately $238,032 on the street.

CBP Officials Emphasize Vigilance Against Smuggling Tactics

"Smugglers are employing innovative tactics to smuggle lethal drugs into the country," stated Mariza Marin, the Port Director for San Ysidro. "Despite these challenges, officers remain vigilant while effectively utilizing their training, canine resources, and nonintrusive technology to thwart these smuggling attempts."

In addition to the fentanyl, CBP officers confiscated the electric moped, a GPS tracker, and a cellphone. The moped's driver was taken into custody and is slated for federal prosecution on charges related to narcotics importation.

Previous Significant Seizures Highlight Ongoing Border Challenges

This recent interdiction follows other substantial drug busts by CBP officers, including an incident in May where agents confiscated over $300,000 worth of narcotics in a single day across two separate vehicles.

On May 17, officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry directed a 2013 Honda Civic to secondary inspection after a scan identified irregularities within the vehicle's firewall.

This inspection led to the discovery of six packages containing white fentanyl powder, valued at an estimated $113,600, alongside 8.4 pounds of cocaine with an approximate street value of $161,600.

Later that same day, approximately 100 miles away at the Calexico East Port of Entry, officers referred a 2011 Nissan Cube for a secondary examination.

A scan of this vehicle revealed anomalies in its flooring. Upon further inspection, CBP officers uncovered 63 packages filled with methamphetamine.
