FBI Nabs Fifth 'Most Wanted Fraudster' in India for Alleged $600K SNAP Scheme
Federal authorities apprehended a naturalized U.S. citizen in India, marking the fifth arrest under a program targeting individuals accused of significant financial crimes who have fled overseas.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in collaboration with Indian authorities, has successfully apprehended a man identified as one of its "Most Wanted Fraudsters," who is accused of orchestrating a significant Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) scheme. The arrest of the suspect, a naturalized U.S. citizen, marks the fifth capture under an FBI initiative designed to track down individuals facing charges for major financial offenses who have sought to evade justice by fleeing abroad. Authorities are currently working to repatriate him to the United States to address the pending charges.
Major Fraud Initiative Yields Results
Launched in June, the FBI's "Most Wanted Fraudsters" program has now resulted in the apprehension of five fugitives. According to bureau officials, these individuals are collectively implicated in alleged fraud exceeding $2 billion and had spent a combined total of nearly 4,000 days evading capture before their arrests. This latest capture, according to FBI representatives, highlights the agency's steadfast dedication to pursuing alleged financial criminals, particularly those who attempt to escape prosecution by moving overseas.
A spokesperson for the agency emphasized the commitment to holding such individuals accountable.
"The days of taking advantage of American taxpayers without consequence are over," the spokesperson stated.
Details of the Alleged SNAP Scheme
Federal investigators allege that the arrested individual defrauded the U.S. government of at least $600,000 through a SNAP fraud operation. This scheme reportedly ran between March 2024 and June 2025 while he was operating an Asian grocery store in Tacoma, Washington.
The FBI's findings indicate that the suspect allegedly engaged in a practice where he would swipe Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards belonging to SNAP recipients. Instead of providing eligible food purchases, he would give them cash and then retain approximately half of the benefit value for himself.
Following an indictment on charges of wire fraud and SNAP benefits fraud, the individual was reportedly ordered to surrender his passport and remain within Washington state while awaiting judicial proceedings. However, investigators assert that he subsequently crossed into Canada before traveling to India. Consequently, a federal arrest warrant was issued on May 21, 2026, charging him with violating the conditions of his release.
The FBI had previously offered a reward of up to $150,000 for information that would lead to his arrest and conviction. Prior to his apprehension, the naturalized U.S. citizen was believed to be residing in India.
The Fraud Division affirmed its ongoing commitment to collaboration in such cases.
"The Fraud Division will continue to work hand-in-hand with the FBI to ensure fraudsters like [the arrested individual] are held accountable, no matter where they hide," a representative stated.
The FBI confirmed its efforts are focused on returning the individual to the U.S. to face the charges.
