Atlanta Falcons Elevate Michael Penix Jr. to Starting Quarterback Amidst Offensive Struggles

The Atlanta Falcons have made a significant change at quarterback, with head coach Kevin Stefanski officially naming rookie Michael Penix Jr. as the starter for Thursday night's upcoming contest against the Green Bay Packers. This move comes as the team, mired in an 0-2 start, seeks to inject vitality into an offense that has struggled profoundly in the early season. The decision effectively concludes the brief tenure of Cooper Rush as the team's primary signal-caller.

Offensive Struggles Prompt Change

Penix Jr.'s ascent to the starting role follows a period of careful recovery. He had been sidelined since November 2025, when he sustained his third career anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear during a Week 11 defeat to Carolina. After a summer focused on rehabilitation and a cautious approach that included splitting first-team practice repetitions last week, Penix Jr. has now received full clearance for his surgically repaired left knee.

The urgency for a change at quarterback intensified following Sunday's decisive 34-3 loss. Over the first two weeks of the season, Atlanta's offensive unit has managed a mere 16 total points and has yet to execute a single play within the opponent's red zone.

Cooper Rush began Week 2 as the starter after recording a disappointing 2.6 QBR in the season opener. His performance in the subsequent game proved even more challenging, as he committed three turnovers against Carolina—two interceptions and a lost fumble—leading to his benching in the third quarter. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand then entered the game in relief, only to throw a pick-six on his first possession, culminating in a disastrous outing for Atlanta's aerial attack.

This quarterback situation emerged after offseason acquisition Tua Tagovailoa, who had secured the starting position during training camp, suffered an oblique injury during a practice session just prior to Week 1. This injury unexpectedly elevated Rush into the starting role by default.

Coach Stefanski postponed the official announcement until he had the opportunity to speak with the players in the locker room on Monday afternoon.

"I will give you an update when I've been able to talk to the players and work through it," Stefanski had stated. "So, I don't have an update right this minute. But again, constant communication with Mike, with all of our guys, so we'll work through it this week."

A Challenging Debut Ahead

Penix Jr. now faces an immediate and challenging test, being thrust into a starting role on a short week, with the game taking place at the iconic Lambeau Field.

Confronting Green Bay's formidable pass rush with limited practice repetitions presents a substantial challenge for the young quarterback. However, Penix Jr.'s renowned arm strength is seen as Atlanta's most promising asset to deter opposing defenses, potentially creating running lanes for Bijan Robinson and integrating pass-catchers like Drake London and Kyle Pitts more effectively into the offensive scheme.
