Ahead of a recent Monday Night Football matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints, a prominent sports broadcasting network aimed to generate excitement for the game. Second-year Saints quarterback Tyler Shough was an obvious choice to highlight given his recent performance.
However, the network, which often refers to itself as a global leader in sports coverage, appeared to make a significant error in its promotional material, specifically regarding the pronunciation of a key NFL player's name.
Social Media Caption Sparks Controversy
The network's primary social media account on X (formerly Twitter) shared a graphic featuring Shough, accompanied by the caption: "SHOUGH FLOW 🥶."
While intended to be catchy, the caption quickly became a point of contention among football enthusiasts because Shough's last name does not rhyme with "flow."
His surname is pronounced "Shuck," a detail generally known by most dedicated football followers. Shough was, after all, the runner-up for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award in the previous season, and his name's pronunciation has remained consistent.
Fans React to Pronunciation Error
Social media users swiftly began to mock the network for crafting a promotional phrase based on an incorrect pronunciation.
"Shough doesn't rhyme with flow and now I can't unsee it," one user commented.
Another individual drew a comparison to a memorable scene from the television series "The Office," where characters Andy and Erin perform a song mispronouncing "Sabre" as "sah-BRAY," only to discover the correct pronunciation is "SAY-ber."
Many online commentators simply expressed bewilderment, questioning how a major sports network could employ staff unaware of how to pronounce the names of well-known NFL players.
Shough's Name and On-Field Success
In fairness, Shough himself has previously acknowledged the unusual pronunciation of his last name, even joking that it's "basically impossible" for someone to pronounce correctly without having heard it before.
Nevertheless, one might expect a network tasked with broadcasting his games to have personnel familiar with such details.
This season, Shough has demonstrated strong performance, accumulating 917 passing yards and eight touchdowns while completing 68.9% of his throws over three games. The New Orleans team has consistently delivered high-scoring offenses, putting up at least 24 points in every contest, including 30 in their season opener against Detroit and 27 last week against Las Vegas.
Given his notable statistics and team success, the network had ample legitimate material to promote the quarterback without resorting to a rhyming caption based on an incorrect pronunciation of his name.
