Chiefs Coordinator Eric Bieniemy Remains Engaged with Team Amidst Wife's Recovery from Shooting Incident
Despite a profound family crisis involving his wife and son, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is actively contributing to the team remotely.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is navigating a significant personal crisis following an incident on July 26 where his son, Elijah, allegedly shot his wife, Mia, multiple times, resulting in her hospitalization.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach confirmed that Bieniemy has maintained his involvement with the team, emphasizing that his family's well-being is his primary focus.
Offensive Coordinator's Remote Contributions
According to reports, Veach informed journalists that the organization has provided Bieniemy with a live feed of practice sessions, enabling him to observe and analyze drills from a remote location. Veach recounted an instance where Bieniemy contacted him during a practice, requesting to speak with Head Coach Andy Reid, who had facilitated Bieniemy's return to the team earlier this offseason.
That’s the thing…it’s so refreshing to have back — that attention to detail. He demands each player knows his assignment. There’s never a safe space with him.
Veach stated, referring to Bieniemy, who had asked Reid to convey specific instructions to rookie running back Emmett Johnson. Veach further explained that Bieniemy's return was intended to provide a “kick in the a--” to the roster, clarifying that this was meant in the most positive sense.
GM Veach Highlights Bieniemy's Impact
The team's performance last season, which saw them finish with a 6-11 record, was notably below the organization's usual standards. This particular group had been on the verge of establishing a dynasty, with some observers suggesting they had already achieved that status.
Bieniemy possesses extensive familiarity with the team, having contributed to two Super Bowl victories during his tenure. The Chiefs are optimistic that his leadership and strategic guidance can help restore them to that championship caliber of play.
Him being out there and hearing that voice, whether it be ‘Finish’ or ‘Alignment’ or whatever…he demands that you are buttoned up on your details, and that is a mirror image of coach and how he wants things run.
Veach commented, describing Bieniemy's exacting approach.
The Incident and Legal Ramifications
The timeline for Bieniemy's in-person presence with the team remains uncertain following the shooting incident in Ashburn, Virginia, where his 57-year-old wife was allegedly shot by their 27-year-old son at their home. Mia sustained critical injuries but has since been moved out of the intensive care unit.
According to a press release from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Elijah has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.
Reports indicate that a person believed to be Elijah contacted law enforcement two days prior to the alleged shooting of his mother. During this call, he reportedly stated he was unable to access his weapons, claiming his parents “are withholding his weapons and that he’s a certified UFC fighter, so now he feels like he cannot defend himself.”
Court records reveal that Elijah's court appearance has been postponed until he undergoes a mental-health competency evaluation. The documents state that he “appears to suffer from significant mental health issues” and “does not appear able to assist in his own defense at the present time.”
Prior to his current return to the Chiefs, Bieniemy's career included stints with the Washington Commanders, the Chicago Bears, and the UCLA athletic program.
The 56-year-old coach continues to manage personal family matters while actively contributing to the Chiefs as training camp intensifies this week.
