Dog Treat Founder Emphasizes Whole Foods, Even Shares Products With Her Own Children

As the nation observes a special day dedicated to canine companions, one entrepreneur in the pet treat industry is making a strong case for integrating dogs into a broader movement focused on health and nutrient-dense foods. This philosophy, which champions wholesome ingredients, has guided her company's approach to pet nutrition.

The founder attests that her company has consistently avoided artificial colorings and flavorings. Instead, the vibrant hues of their products are derived entirely from genuine fruits and vegetables. She anticipates that a national push towards reducing refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and certain artificial additives, which became a federal initiative in February 2025, will significantly influence the pet sector.

"My hope is that as a brand, we can inspire other pet brands to make better choices to really impact the lives and the health and wellness of dogs," she stated.

Inspired by a Personal Journey

The company, Lord Jameson, was established in 2019, born from a deeply personal experience. The founder was motivated by her late dog, Jameson, after identifying a significant gap in the market for genuinely healthy dog treats. She recounted that Jameson had faced a severe medical condition, and the prescribed medications led to toxicity in his system.

This challenge prompted her to collaborate with a homeopathic veterinarian, which underscored the efficacy of plant-based medicine. Many of the formulations, particularly within their wellness product range, are specifically designed to support dogs during recovery, incorporating plant-based ingredients, a variety of herbs, and botanicals.

A Commitment to Wholesome Ingredients

In the initial phase of developing the brand, the founder conducted extensive research, surveying over 1,000 pet owners. This revealed a widespread issue: many dogs suffered from allergies or sensitivities to common ingredients such as animal proteins, preservatives, and artificial food colorings. This insight solidified her vision for treats crafted with "completely clean ingredients, organic, gluten-free, no preservatives, no toxins, no artificial colors or flavors."

Remarkably, despite the absence of preservatives, the treats maintain an 18-month shelf life. The founder highlighted this as a significant accomplishment, noting it is "very difficult to achieve in production" and represents "another key selling point for us." She believes Lord Jameson has fundamentally "reimagined what dog treats can be and should be," emphasizing quality and purity.

Demonstrating her confidence in the products, the founder not only consumes the treats herself but also includes them in her children's lunchboxes.

These treats have garnered considerable popularity among pet owners, partly due to their positive impact on canine digestive health. The founder shared her personal experience, stating that as a dog owner, she understands the common frustration of buying pet food or treats only for the dog to develop digestive issues like diarrhea.

"Because we're using whole-food ingredients and no preservatives, you're going to get a nice firm poop after they eat. It sounds funny to say, but this is something you'll see in a lot of our reviews," she explained.

Beyond general digestive benefits, the treats are also designed to be suitable for dogs with specific health conditions such as colitis, diabetes, or other specialized dietary requirements. Expanding its product offerings, Lord Jameson recently introduced a range of "protein-inspired" flavors within its Love Puffs line, which are crafted from organic sorghum, a whole grain rich in both protein and fiber.

Operational Structure and Market Presence

A distinctive aspect of Lord Jameson's operation is its "completely vertically integrated" structure. The company manages all its manufacturing processes internally, with its kitchen, warehouse, and fulfillment center consolidated in Boulder, Colorado. This integrated approach offers several advantages.

The founder noted that this strategy has enabled the company to maintain stable pricing, with "no price increase for three or four years." Furthermore, the primary sourcing of ingredients within North America has prevented "issues with any tariffs."

Lord Jameson products have a significant market reach, available in 5,500 independent pet retailers across the United States. They are also stocked in select grocery stores and have expanded their international presence, currently sold in four countries.
