Dan Wilson Announces His Own Departure as Seattle Mariners Manager in Rare Postgame Briefing

On Sunday, Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson delivered the news personally to both his team and the assembled media that his tenure would conclude, and he would not return for the 2027 season.

An Unconventional Announcement

Prior to the final game of the season against the Los Angeles Angels, Wilson convened a private meeting to inform players and coaching staff of the decision. Following the game, he then stepped before reporters at a podium to make the public announcement and field questions. This sequence of events starkly deviates from typical Major League Baseball protocol, which usually sees front-office executives issue a press release or conduct a solo news conference, while the departing manager remains out of the public eye. A manager personally announcing their own dismissal is an exceptionally rare occurrence in contemporary professional sports.

"This season has been very difficult, and of course, the results have not been what any of us have expected," Wilson stated. "As a result, it's concluded that today is my last day as manager of the Seattle Mariners."

Wilson, a former catcher for the Mariners who assumed the managerial role in August 2024, acknowledged his deep connection to the organization.

"I'm still processing this with my family, and it's a very difficult day," he shared. "We love this city. We love this community and we appreciate the organization for what it has meant to the family since coming here as a player in '94. We feel extremely blessed by all the opportunities we've been afforded."

A Season of Unmet Expectations

The 2026 season began with considerable optimism for the Mariners. Building on a successful 2025 campaign that saw them win the AL West title and advance to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, falling just one victory short of the World Series, expectations for the subsequent year were exceptionally high. However, the team experienced a significant decline, finishing the 2026 season in third place with a disappointing 76-86 record.

Several factors contributed to this downward trajectory. The squad faced an offensive regression from key players, inconsistent performances from the starting pitching rotation, and a notable collapse of the bullpen in the second half of the season. Additionally, the team registered some of the poorest defensive metrics across Major League Baseball.

Comments from players late in the season brought to light concerns about a perceived lack of accountability within the clubhouse. When pressed on whether leadership failed to uphold necessary standards, Wilson addressed the criticism directly.

"That's always a necessary component, and I think accountability comes in a lot of different ways," Wilson commented. "Obviously, I think you look back, and there's a lot of things that you can point to, and perhaps that's one of them."

Taking Responsibility for Performance

When asked if the ultimate decision originated from the front office, Wilson accepted the inherent realities of sports leadership.

"I've been in baseball a while, and this is what happens," Wilson remarked. "Managers shoulder the blame and shoulder the responsibility. And this is obviously difficult."

Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and General Manager Justin Hollander are slated to remain in their positions for the 2027 season. Dipoto acknowledged that the organization "collectively failed to meet our own expectations" and concurred that a change in leadership was essential. Wilson concludes his tenure as the Mariners' manager with a career record of 187 wins and 171 losses.
