Chris Spatola, a respected college basketball analyst for ESPN and former assistant coach at Duke University, has passed away at the age of 47, the network confirmed on Tuesday. Spatola, who was the son-in-law of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, brought a unique depth of experience to his broadcasting role.

A Distinguished Career on and Off the Court
Before transitioning into sports broadcasting, Spatola established himself as a formidable presence on the basketball court. He was a starting guard for the Army Black Knights, leading the team in scoring during three of his four seasons. By the end of his collegiate career, he had amassed 1,543 points, securing a place among Army’s top 10 all-time scorers.
Following his graduation from the United States Military Academy, Spatola embarked on a five-year period of active military service from 2002 to 2007. During this time, he was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His exceptional performance in combat earned him the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and he was further recognized for his outstanding leadership with the Army Commendation Medal.
Coaching Success at Duke and Beyond
Spatola then joined the coaching staff at Duke University, serving under his father-in-law, Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, from 2007 to 2012. As an assistant coach for the Blue Devils, he was part of the team that captured the 2010 NCAA Division I men's basketball national championship.
His coaching acumen also extended to the international stage, where he served as a court coach for the U.S. men's national basketball team. Under Coach Krzyzewski’s leadership, the team secured a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
