Despite the celebratory mood, the victory is tempered by a significant setback: star forward Folarin Balogun, who netted his third World Cup goal during the match, will be absent from Monday night’s pivotal game against Belgium in Seattle.
Balogun was shown a red card in the 64th minute following a decision that has sparked widespread controversy. When Brazilian head referee Raphael Claus issued the red card to Balogun, both the spectators at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium and millions of viewers worldwide were taken aback. This not only forced the USMNT to play the remainder of the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina with ten men but also meant Balogun would miss their subsequent fixture if they advanced.
Lalas Slams Officiating After Balogun's Ejection

Following the conclusion of the match, former USMNT standout Alexi Lalas voiced his strong disapproval regarding the officiating during the game. Speaking during a post-match broadcast analysis, Lalas did not mince words, labeling the refereeing performance "An absolute joke of a refereeing night."
Lalas further fueled the debate with a post on X, drawing a parallel to a past incident involving Argentine football icon Lionel Messi. Many observers quickly referenced the Messi situation after witnessing Balogun's dismissal.
Contrasting Incidents: Balogun vs. Messi
In Balogun’s case, the red card was issued after he stepped on the back of Tarik Muharemovic’s leg, resulting in a rolled ankle. This occurred while both players were vying for possession of an incoming ball. A VAR review upheld the decision. Despite the contact, it appeared there was no malicious intent from Balogun; he was merely attempting to land on his right leg after being bumped himself, and his foot unfortunately came down on Muharemovic.
Lalas immediately recalled an incident from Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria. In that instance, Messi was seen digging his cleat into the back of an Algerian player’s calf while attempting to gain control of the ball. Lalas shared a clip of this event on X with the succinct caption, "'Sup," clearly implying a comparison between the two situations. Messi faced no on-field or post-match disciplinary action for what many perceived as a more severe action than Balogun's, particularly given that Messi appeared to be looking down at his opponent’s leg from behind just before the contact.
Conversely, Balogun was not observing the back of Muharemovic's right leg when the contact occurred, though the potential for injury from the rolled ankle was evident.
Looking Ahead to the Round of 16
Regardless of the ongoing debate, the USMNT now faces the challenge of replacing Balogun for the upcoming match against Belgium. Manager Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff will be tasked with deliberating over who will fill this crucial attacking role against a formidable opponent.
