The interim staff report, issued by the committee's Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, critiques the county's "sanctuary" policies, alleging that Arlington and other Democratic-led jurisdictions disregard public safety by implementing measures that impede federal immigration authorities from detaining and apprehending undocumented individuals with criminal records.
Local Republicans have echoed these concerns, asserting that elected officials in Arlington prioritize undocumented immigrants over the safety of the community. A local GOP chair stated, "Arlington elected officials prioritize illegal aliens over the safety of Arlington residents. And as an Arlington resident, I've seen this play out over the last several months."
Controversial Local Policies
The committee's 23-page document specifically points to a perceived lack of collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies. It references Arlington County's official board Trust Policy, which governs the actions of local police.
According to the report, the updated Trust Policy, effective May 2025, restricts the Arlington County Police Department from initiating contact with federal immigration authorities. This prohibition applies even when an undocumented individual is identified as a "violent felon, gang member, human trafficker, or terrorist."
Prosecutorial Discretion and Immigration Status
Further details from the committee's report emerged from a closed-door deposition on July 16, 2026, involving Parisa Dehghani-Tafti, the Commonwealth's Attorney for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church. During this testimony, Dehghani-Tafti reportedly acknowledged that her office considers immigration status when determining case outcomes.
She also admitted that no written guidelines explicitly forbid considering immigration status for any type of crime. The report highlights her defense of a specific memo that advises prosecutors to explore alternative charges when a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient faces accusations of drunk driving.
<The memo's rationale stems from the fact that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services classifies a DUI conviction as a "significant misdemeanor." Such a classification can prevent DACA renewal and lead to deportation. Therefore, the memo guides prosecutors to consider DACA status to mitigate what it describes as "disproportionate and devastating collateral consequences."
Commenting on these practices, the local Republican chair criticized the Commonwealth's Attorney, stating, "It's not the job of a prosecutor to decide lenience against illegal aliens who are oftentimes committing violent crimes against individuals or property crimes, but that is exactly what Arlington Commonwealth's Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti has been doing." He further characterized Dehghani-Tafti as a "left-wing criminal justice activist," drawing parallels to Steve Descano, the Commonwealth's Attorney for neighboring Fairfax County, who has also faced scrutiny amid reports of crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.
Official Rebuttal to Report
In response to the committee's findings, Dehghani-Tafti issued a statement, describing the report as a "political sham." She contended that the committee's refusal to allow her public testimony was an attempt to "distort a record."
"This report is the predictable product of that process— a piece of political propaganda timed for the midterms, built on the deliberate misrepresentations of my policies and my testimony," Dehghani-Tafti stated.
She further questioned the committee's motives, adding, "Now it’s clear why they wouldn’t hold a public hearing and why they stonewalled my requests for the full deposition transcript. They didn’t want the public to see it. I demand the committee release the full, unedited transcript of my deposition immediately."
