Arizona Sheriff's Helicopter Crew Saves Man Trapped on Overturned Truck in Swift Floodwaters

A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office aviation team successfully extracted an individual stranded on his capsized vehicle amid rapidly rising water in a flooded wash.

Arizona Sheriff's Helicopter Crew Saves Man Trapped on Overturned Truck in Swift Floodwaters

A dramatic rescue unfolded in Tonopah, Arizona, as a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) helicopter crew successfully airlifted a man from his overturned truck, which was engulfed by swiftly moving floodwaters.

The MCSO's Fox 1 aviation unit responded to a call on Tuesday morning concerning a flooded wash. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a man precariously positioned on top of his capsized vehicle, with torrents of water surging around him.

Footage released by authorities depicted the individual balanced on the truck's chassis as muddy floodwaters coursed relentlessly past.

Perilous Hoist Rescue

Given the hazardous conditions, ground responders determined that attempting a direct approach to the stranded man posed an unacceptable risk. Consequently, a "hoist rescue" operation was deemed the safest and most viable method for extraction.

A member of the Fox 1 crew was seen being carefully lowered from the helicopter towards the vehicle. After securing the man into a specialized rescue harness, both were then hoisted upwards to the safety of the aircraft.

Following the successful retrieval, the man was transported to the riverbank, where fire department personnel were on standby to provide assistance, according to statements from the sheriff's office.

Pilot Rich Dickner, who was at the controls of the helicopter, recounted the escalating danger, noting the rapid increase in water levels around the vehicle.

"We didn't waste much time," Dickner stated. "As opposed to when we first got there, you can see the water line on the video — it's below the window — and it had risen up to the top of the window. So there was that urgency."

Reports indicated that Deputy Lindsey Smith was the crew member lowered approximately 80 feet from the helicopter. She initially faced challenges in gaining stable footing before managing to secure herself firmly to the overturned truck.

The entire rescue operation was completed in under five minutes, officials confirmed.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office commended its crew for their efficient and skilled intervention, which ensured the man's safety.

"Thanks to the skill and quick response of our Aviation crew, the subject was safely brought to shore," the sheriff's office declared. "Excellent work, Fox 1!"

Flash Flood Warnings Remain

The severe weather conditions, which contributed to the dangerous flash flooding, were attributed to the remnants of Hurricane Polo, bringing historic levels of rainfall to various parts of the Desert Southwest.

The Flood Control District of Maricopa County has issued a critical warning to motorists, advising against attempting to traverse flooded roadways.

"Remember: Conditions can change fast. If you encounter a flooded roadway, Turn Around, Don't Drown."
