Texas quarterback Arch Manning participated in a postgame interview with ESPN correspondent Holly Rowe on Saturday, an interaction that occurred less than two weeks after he publicly apologized for a comment he made regarding an AI-generated video. The video in question depicted Rowe being slapped, which Manning had described as "hilarious."
Rowe conducted the interview with Manning on the field following the No. 1 ranked Texas team's narrow 20-17 victory over No. 14 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium, a game where the Longhorns managed to hold off a late comeback attempt from their opponents.
Postgame Dialogue with Rowe
Rowe initiated the conversation by acknowledging the intensity of the game. "I know this was a hard-fought win. This was dramatic down the stretch, but that long drive, you guys punch it in, you go over, and you're hyping up your offensive line. How huge was that moment for you guys in this game?" she inquired.
"It was fun," Manning responded. "I thought they battled the whole time. Shout out to our defense. Colin Simmons, that's a real player right there."
She then shifted to the historical significance of the venue for Manning's family, noting that his uncle, Peyton Manning, achieved legendary status in college football at the same stadium.
"He was terrific today. Your whole team was," Rowe stated, before asking, "But I know a lot of people think this is a special day for your family. You made your own history out on this field today. What was that like for you, Arch?"
Manning downplayed his individual contribution, emphasizing the team's effort. "It's not about me," he said. "I didn't play very well, but our team played great. Defense played well. SEC road win, that's what it's all about."
During the game, Manning completed 14 out of 19 pass attempts for 201 yards, recording one interception. He was sacked six times. Following that game, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian interrupted Rowe's initial question during an interview, loudly exclaiming "Texas fight" and "Hook ’em" before abruptly departing. Subsequently, an edited video circulated online, falsely depicting Sarkisian slapping Rowe.
Two days later, during a press conference where Manning was asked about social media edits, he referenced the doctored clip. "I saw an AI edit of Sark’s interview," Manning commented. "Y’all seen that one? That’s a a good one. Of him slapping Holly Rowe. It’s hilarious."
Manning issued an apology the following day, acknowledging that his comment was inappropriate and had caused hurt. "I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what she has personally had to deal with because of my comments," Manning wrote in his statement. "I have a ton of respect for her and appreciate her showing me grace in this moment. I need to do better and will be more thoughtful going forward."
Rowe publicly accepted Manning's apology, confirming that they had also engaged in a private discussion. "Thank you Arch," Rowe posted. "I appreciate our conversation about this — which will remain private. Apology accepted. We move forward with respect and kindness for one another."
