Anthony Richardson's Preseason Turnovers Ignite Further Questions on Colts Future

Focusing solely on Anthony Richardson's statistics from the first half of the Indianapolis Colts' recent preseason opener might paint a misleading picture. Although his numbers suggested a competent showing, critical turnovers overshadowed any positive aspects, prompting renewed concerns about his trajectory with the team.

Richardson completed 11 of 14 passes and achieved a quarterback rating of 80.1, even guiding the Colts to a second-quarter touchdown drive. These figures, however, do not fully reflect the reality of his performance.

Early in the game, Richardson threw an interception on his third pass attempt and later fumbled the ball in the second quarter. These costly errors are likely to be the primary focus for coach Shane Steichen during his review of the game film, regardless of any public statements.

Mixed Performance on the Field

The highly anticipated development of Anthony Richardson, once envisioned as the Colts' definitive franchise quarterback, appears to be diverging from initial expectations. His recent outing, unfortunately, did little to quell doubts.

During the touchdown drive, Richardson demonstrated his athletic capabilities, completing an 18-yard pass and a 9-yard screen pass. He also showcased his running prowess with a 7-yard scramble and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, reminding observers of his potential to make plays with his legs.

Yet, the turnovers were particularly jarring, highlighting ongoing issues with ball security. These moments underscore a recurring theme: Richardson's limited playing time in previous seasons and his struggles to capitalize on opportunities when he is on the field.

A Challenging NFL Path Since Draft Day

Richardson arrived in Indianapolis as one of the most high-risk, high-reward selections in the 2023 NFL Draft, chosen by Colts General Manager Chris Ballard with the fourth overall pick. Ballard’s decision balanced Richardson's remarkable physical attributes—including his size, strength, running ability, and powerful arm—against his relatively sparse collegiate experience, having made only 13 starts at the University of Florida.

The initial gamble on Richardson was deemed worthwhile. However, his rookie season was cut short after just four games due0 to a shoulder injury. Returning as the starter in 2024, he continued to be a potent runner, accumulating 499 rushing yards and six touchdowns. His progression as a passer, however, remained inconsistent. He completed only 47.7% of his throws, with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He even briefly lost his starting position after exiting a game due to fatigue, ending the season with more questions about his future than answers.

Shift in Role and Current Backup Competition

The situation further deteriorated for Richardson. In the offseason, the Colts signed Daniel Jones, a free agent quarterback who had previously struggled with the New York Giants, to compete for the starting role. Jones ultimately secured the starting job with relative ease.

Adding to Richardson's challenges, he was again sidelined by injury last year when Jones also went down. Notably, Richardson sustained an injury before a game while working with stretch bands. Faced with a need for a starting quarterback, the Colts subsequently turned to Riley Leonard and then veteran Philip Rivers.

Now 24 years old, Richardson is no longer being evaluated as the Colts' future starting quarterback. Instead, he is vying with Riley Leonard for the backup position behind Daniel Jones. Neither player has definitively seized control of the backup role, as Leonard also threw an interception during his second possession in the second half of the preseason game. The team's reliance on Daniel Jones' health has become increasingly apparent.
