Alina Habba Rejects White House Press Secretary Speculation After Karoline Leavitt's Departure

Alina Habba, currently serving as a senior adviser to the attorney general for U.S. attorneys, has publicly declared she is not a candidate for the White House press secretary position, despite being a leading contender in betting markets.

This announcement follows the news that Karoline Leavitt, the 28-year-old White House press secretary, will conclude her tenure at the end of August. Leavitt, who recently returned from maternity leave, stated her decision was driven by a desire to dedicate more time to her two young children.

Speculation and Habba's Firm Response

As discussions continued regarding who former President Donald Trump might select to succeed Leavitt, the prediction market platform Kalshi saw a surge in bets favoring Habba for the role. Habba had previously been mentioned as a possible candidate for the position after Trump's re-election victory.

Bettors on Kalshi had assigned Habba a 35% probability of being named Leavitt's successor before she publicly addressed the rumors.

Habba, however, quickly dispelled the conjecture. She posted on X, stating, "Flattered by the Kalshi odds, but I'm not in the running for any job." She further added, "However, if I'm getting a new one, I'd love for one of these anonymous sources to let me know first. Fake news remains the undefeated champ…well…until I come at them."

Habba's Prior Considerations and Public Service

When initial speculation emerged about Habba potentially becoming press secretary after Trump's 2024 election win, she expressed gratitude for the consideration but indicated she believed she would "be better served in other capacities."

Habba subsequently served for just over two months as counselor to the president before being appointed interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey. After a federal appeals court upheld a ruling that her subsequent service as acting U.S. attorney was unlawful, she resigned from the role and was later named senior adviser to the attorney general for U.S. attorneys. Throughout Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, Habba also served as his personal attorney and was a prominent surrogate.

New Contenders Emerge for Press Secretary Role

Following Habba's public statement on Wednesday, CNN political commentator Scott Jennings became the new frontrunner on Kalshi's prediction market, with Anna Kelly, Leavitt's deputy, trailing as the second most favored candidate.

Jennings, a former aide to President George W. Bush, was also reportedly considered for the press secretary role after Trump's 2024 election victory, before Leavitt was ultimately chosen. Trump has previously lauded Jennings' recent book and referred to him as a "patriot" who "gets it."
