Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed Faces Backlash Over Abortion Remarks at Town Hall

Michigan Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed has drawn online criticism following a recent town hall event where he discussed his views on reproductive rights. During a "Students vs. Billionaires" gathering at Western Michigan University on Monday, El-Sayed's explanation of his progressive stance, particularly his phrasing when referring to pregnant individuals, sparked considerable debate.

El-Sayed, a vocal advocate for codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law and providing funding for Planned Parenthood, was pressed by a pro-life student regarding why they should consider voting for him.

Responding to the student, El-Sayed stated, "I respect your position insofar as it's founded in the idea that you want to protect and empower life. The question we have to ask ourselves is, what's the best way to do that? And whose life gets destroyed in that process?"

He elaborated, "Because too often when government says that you cannot have reproductive care, you are creating a circumstance in which an adult, or sometimes even a juvenile human, is being reduced into simply a carrying vehicle for a fetus that has not ever breathed air."

El-Sayed further emphasized that restricting abortion access turns "the currently existing life of the mother" into "that person simply into a carrying vehicle for a fetus."

Conservative Critics Decry Language as Dehumanizing

El-Sayed's remarks quickly garnered attention on social media platforms, with conservative commentators accusing him of employing dehumanizing terminology.

RNC Research, an account managed by the Republican National Committee, commented on X, "Abdul El-Sayed won’t even say the word woman while talking about pregnancy."

Rich Sementa, a producer for the Mark Levin Show, also posted on X, observing, "Abdul El-Sayed just said abortion restrictions turn an 'adult or juvenile human' into 'simply a carrying vehicle for a fetus that has not ever breathed air in the world.' He won't even say WOMAN. The baby hasn't 'breathed air' so it's just cargo. This is the Democrat Party in 2026."

Great Lakes HQ, an account affiliated with the super PAC Great Lakes Conservatives Fund, suggested on X that El-Sayed's statement "might be worse than Kamala’s word salad."

Rich Lowry of National Review criticized the phrasing, writing on X, "So much euphemism and jargon in here that it's hard to keep track, all in the cause of avoiding saying that women should be able to abort their babies with no restriction."

Tom Elliott, founder of Grabien Media, remarked on X, "Nobody talks like that in real life."

Amy Curtis, a writer for Townhall, questioned on X, "And we're supposed to believe that this guy is a doctor."

A commentator identified as Dixon also weighed in, stating, "Radicals like Abdul El-Sayed use language that removes the gentle, loving relationship between mothers and their children to achieve their goal of destroying the American family."

El-Sayed's Political Stances and Upcoming Senate Race

El-Sayed's positions on a range of issues, including abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender-affirming care for minors, have become central to his campaign as the high-stakes November election approaches. This race is poised to play a crucial role in determining the balance of power in the Senate. Despite being perceived by some as a progressive, El-Sayed has consistently rejected the "socialist" label, instead identifying himself as a capitalist.

He is set to compete against Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers for the Michigan Senate seat, which is being vacated by the retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
