Four Arrested After 16 Children Found in 'Deplorable' Ohio Home, Some in Critical Condition

Four individuals have been apprehended after 16 children were found living in what officials characterized as “deplorable” conditions, necessitating immediate medical treatment, within a rural Ohio home. The arrests occurred on Wednesday following the discovery.

The children were located during a search of a residence in Hamden, situated approximately 60 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio, as confirmed by Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson during a press briefing. Wilson expressed profound shock, stating, “Conditions you cannot even imagine people being in, let alone children being in.”

Urgent Medical Intervention and Horrific Conditions

All 16 children were promptly removed from the property. Wilson described the scene as the most severe he had encountered in his professional career, labeling it as “pure evil.” Several children were in grave condition upon discovery, with two requiring immediate air transport to Level 1 trauma centers due to their injuries.

“If they had waited 24 hours, there is a very high probability that we’d be dealing with a death, or multiple deaths, of these children,” Wilson emphasized.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain elaborated on the squalid environment, noting a significant presence of feces and bacterial matter throughout the home. Cain grimly remarked that “Most of the livestock was kept in better condition than the children.”

Charges Filed Against Four Suspects

The individuals arrested in connection with the case are Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders. Each has been charged with 16 counts of second-degree child endangering. During a court hearing on Wednesday, a judge entered not guilty pleas on behalf of all four suspects and set their bond at $300,000 each.

Authorities did not confirm the familial relationship among the children, but stated they ranged in age from 18 months to 18 years, encompassing both boys and girls. Attorney General Wilson affirmed the commitment to accountability, stating, “Justice will be served for these children.”

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer clarified that the accused individuals are not originally from Vinton County. He also provided context regarding the nature of the situation, explaining, “This is an intra-family situation. This is not human trafficking. There is nothing to put our other children at risk.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine was kept abreast of the unfolding situation, issuing a statement on Tuesday. “It is heartbreaking to learn the conditions that these children were living in, and to learn of their medical conditions,” Governor DeWine said. He added, “Attorney General Wilson is an experienced prosecutor, and he has told me he has never seen anything like what he saw today. Fran and I pray for these children, and thank the children's services workers, law enforcement officers, and medical personnel who are helping them.”
